Interview with multi-instrumentalist Erik Buschmann

Soon to release his new EP 1v1, ambient musician Erik Buschmann has released his new single ‘All Related’. The new EP was written around the music producers internal struggle to find calm and balance in trying times.  Inspired by the likes of hip-hop legend J. Dilla to electronica artist Jon Hopkins, the possibilities of Buschmann’s music are endless.

We find out more about Buschmann in the exclusive.

Sum up your year so far in two words.

Spacey, Weird.

Tell us more about how your latest/upcoming release was conceptualised?

The song started to take its shape when I was jamming with my dear friend and violin player Nadine Dekker. I was tweaking her sound with some analogue gear and we captured the lead melody during that stage by just jamming and making interesting sounds. It is so much fun to work like that and to just find a sound that gives you a specific feeling or reaction and build upon that.

Describe a typical day in your studio space.

Always start with a good cup of coffee haha. A lot of the time it’s just jamming on synths and collecting sounds that may potentially become a song in a later stadium. When I get hooked on a sound or beat or anything that resonates in a certain way I get very obsessed with finishing it. I always have some kind of anxiety during the process of finishing and I know that it is a bit exhausting in a way but it also motivates me to just go through that stage and get to a point where I feel comfortable with the overall track.

What are the most important pieces of equipment for you?

All-time favorite is the Elektron Analog Rytm. I wrote some complete songs on that thing. Absolutely in love with that machine. I tend to use the Korg ms-20 a lot, and if I don’t have that synth available I use the Volca Bass from Korg for bass lines and scream synths with a bunch of verb. In terms of effects I really love the El Capistan pedal for delays, and really like the spring option in the Polara reverb pedal.

Describe what an ideal day would be for you?

That’s a difficult one… I think it is waking up with a cappuccino, have some studio time with inspiring artists and friends, and maybe playing a gig in the evening at a festival. I guess it’s always about the magic balance between playing shows and creating new music.

Do you have a favourite memory of your career so far that you will take with you forever?

Deffo! It was one of my first shows abroad with the band Darlyn that I used to play drums with. We had I think three shows in a row in Austria and we were treated like royals the whole week! It was so much fun and an experience that I’ll never forget:).

Who is your musical guilty pleasure?

Haha, I think that would be some Of Max Martin’s hits. I go with ‘Domino’ from Jessie J.

What can we expect from you in the near future?

I just finished my ep and two extra singles. Will drop them in the upcoming months.
