Circles & Ellipses’ latest music video is an ode to the ancient evacuated city of Matera, Italy

Circles & Ellipses have released the music video for his rework of ‘Meltdown‘ and it takes the viewer through a gorgeous tour of the ruins of the cliffside city, Matera. The track is taken from “Burn: Cycle Reworks” which is set for release on the 22nd February via Here & Now Recordings; a follow-up EP to the original soundtrack of the 1994 video game Burn: Cycle, the first-ever video game soundtrack to feature orchestral music, consisting of four reimagined electronic compositions.

Chris Whitten (Circles & Ellipses) sees himself as a drummer with a passion for synthesizers. Although he loves the synth sounds of 90’s techno and electronica, Whitten also takes influences from more classic sounds such as the work of Herbie Hancock, Jan Garbarek and Eberhard Weber. As for his electronica inspirations, Whitten has drawn influence from the likes of minimal techno artist Speedy J, early Detroit techno from 69 (Carl Craig) and Kenny Larkin, as well UK’s Kirk DeGiorgio and contemporary electronic producer Lone. Whitten’s work as Circles And Ellipses for the “Burn: Cycle Reworks” EP can best be compared to minimal techno maestros such as Stephan Bodzin and Max Cooper.

The music video his remix of ‘Meltdown‘ is shot in the picturesque ruins of Matera, Italy. A city that went from being one of the poorest squalors in Italy to one of the go to trendy tourist destinations in Europe. Founded by the Romans around the 3rd Century BC, this ancient city has seen tremendous poverty during the 19th and 20th Century. Due to the city being built into the caves in the cliffside, it offered small space and a cold atmosphere. Evacuated during the 20th Century due to health and safety concerns, it was awarded World Heritage Site status by UNESCO since 1993. Since then, this scenic city has become a popular tourist hotspot. One look at Circles & Ellipses‘ music video and it’s clear why these ruins have become such a famous destination.
