Brooklyn-based songwriter Allison Ponthier shares her new single, “Gross,” out today on streaming platforms. Yesterday, Billboard Pride premiered the track and its accompanying music video, stating, “While the glossy, groovy song tackles the subject with a tongue-in-cheek kind of humor, Ponthier couldn’t be more serious about how we take care of ourselves.” In anticipation of her debut EP, expected later this year, Ponthier has put out two singles – “Get Low” and “Gross.”
While some consider pampering, face masks and spa days to be self-care, “Gross” is about self-care as love and acceptance, giving yourself a break from the pressures in life and just surviving. Ponthier recorded the demo in her bedroom using GarageBand, never intending it to be a serious release, but during the creative process, she realized humor would always be part of who she is. Just like overactive sweat glands. It’s cheery and sweet, while still portraying a biting message.
