Nuit Oceān’s EP Fire Divine is poetry that one must savor as food for the soul. The EP was released last week via ROUGE NEON RECORDS and is available on all major streaming platforms. The French downtempo producer has received acclaim from a number of publications, including i-D Mag, Konbini, Vogue France, Rolling Stone France as well as Tsugi, all adding to his more than noteworthy play count of just under 10 million streams.
A wanderer at heart, Nuit Ocean has visited his father’s home country of Zaire (DRC), India and even spent a portion of his life living and working in London. However, France is where home and heart is, with memories infused with his mother’s Algerian influence seeping through. We learn more about Steve Mesmin aka Nuit Oceān below.
Describe your sound for us. What do you want people to feel when they hear your music?
Describing my sound is relatively complicated. It’s a hybrid thing that oscillates between organic and digital. My music is felt as much as it is listened to. I just wish people would take the time to listen and hear my music but especially music in general. Take time…
Which 3 artists have influenced you the most growing up?
Kurt Cobain /Sade /Justin Vernon
How did you discover your particular sound?
Since I added my voice, I’ve been inspired by many people I like but I don’t imitate. I can’t do that. So I think my voice determines my particular sound.
What are the most important pieces of equipment to you?
My Fender cabronita surf green. I always start by composing with it and then I play with the rest.
What outside of music inspires you to create?
I’m a big fan of 90s movies. The imagery of the ‘90s fascinates me. Of Lynch and more recently of the Safdie’s brothers or Zal Batmanglij.
Do you have a favourite memory of your career so far that you will take with you forever?
The NRMAL festival in Mexico, no words to describe it, it was magical. The people were incredible!
You previously mentioned, “The FIRE DIVINE guides us to a better version of ourselves, towards a brighter future.” Can you explain what the Fire Divine is?
The ‘Fire Divine’ is, according to everyone’s beliefs. Energy, a feeling, a call, a message, a sign, which passes through us at a time when we can listen to it, and connect with yourself to move forward even in the hardest times.
If you could work with, or perform alongside any artist living or passed, who would it be?
Today the one that inspires me the most is SEVDALIZA. If I could have the opportunity to work with her it would be an honour.
What kind of message are you trying to send with your music?
Accept your own differences. Everyone has the right to see the world differently. LOVE.
What advice would you give to a fellow artist who feels lost?
Use this feeling and describe it in your art! Being lost doesn’t mean that we are crazy or not normal, it’s just that our perception of the world is different at times. And that’s what makes the strength of an artist. The difference! The world is beautiful because of the difference!
What can we expect from you in the near future? Any upcoming projects or gigs in the pipeline that you would like to tell us about?
New songs very quickly!
